Chapter Twenty-Six

Castle Blackwood, the greatest fortress known to the world, stood in solitude on the island across from the village, sharing its name. It was peaceful in the early hours of the morning where soldiers were training, merchants were selling and cooks were preparing the dinner for later in the day. In its millennia of service, the Iron Knights have made themselves known as one of the greatest military forces known to Man, Elf or Dwarf and for good reason.

Ryon had been awoken from his slumber at his usual time. He took the brief quiet to study more on this old god Shale and what he represented for the cultists. Allegedly, according to these books Ryon had found in their library, Shale was the god that controlled time and death. Ryon determined perhaps they were trying to appease him with their experiments, but Ryon could only guess that it didn’t please this old god as much as they had hoped.

He looked to Agnes as she sat at the edge of his bed sleeping fitfully; she had gained some weight since he had first found her in Merton, and seeing her wag her tail as much as she did now only made him smile more often than before. She was his little lass, his companion on the road. He was thankful to have her just as he was thankful to Alvis for taking him and all the other soldiers into his home of Castle Blackwood, the home of the homeless he jokingly called it yet this was much closer to the truth than he would care to admit.

Ryon dreaded to think where he would be today if Alvis hadn’t taken him in and his talents had gone to waste as a pickpocket or a mercenary.

Since Aedan’s return, he realised how frequently his old friend smiled now. Seeing the attractive sorceress by his side, Ryon understood why.

His thoughts were interrupted by a familiar scream coming from outside his window. “What do you mean he’s ‘Unavailable’?” Ryon could recognise those angry screams anywhere. Elsheer Witherfang.

From what Ryon could gather, he was having a heated argument with another of the old Hunters in the Keep.

“I apologise Master Elsheer, but he paid me not to say anything.” The man said defensively.

Elsheer grabbed his by his Cuirass and pulled him close. “Do I look like I care, boy? I need to talk to him this instant! Tell me where he is or I’ll have Master Rhys take you to the conditioning chamber for an entire day!”

The soldier stared at Elsheer in fear, but by his expression Ryon could tell he was trying to decide whose wrath to face, Elsheer’s or whoever paid him.

Ryon left his tower and called over to the Master. “Elsheer, can I be of assistance?”

The Great Elf turned towards Ryon, calming in his tone as he spoke to his fellow Master of the Order, telling him everything. “Ah, Master Ryon. Yes, I do need your help. I need to talk to Aedan about
